Earth Manners Students are taught Good Earth Manners by various animals living at WEEC. Good Earth Manners are behaviors that animals must use to survive; they are also behaviors that serve students well in school, in the community, and as citizens of planet Earth. In the process students get to touch and hold some of the animals reinforcing the good manners necessary to do that. I f weather and time permit, students visit the habitat to observe animals in their natural surroundings. Students take home a coloring book to reinforce the importance of good Earth manners. Environmental tie-ins include using the animals to help students understand that it is their responsibilty to take proper care of planet Earth so that all living things will have a home.

IBPYP Standards

ALCOS Earth & Space Science
(9) Identify ways to conserve Earth’s resources

ALCOS Life Science
(4) Describe survival traits of living things, including color, shape, size, texture, and covering.
--Classify plants and animals according to physical traits
--Identify developmental stages of plants and animals
--Describe a variety of habitats and natural homes of animals

Organisms (HASP)
Animals 2 x 2(AMSTI)
Using living and non-living things, student discover their similarities and differences in order to properly classify them. Students work with pairs of live animals at five stations that demostrate the concepts of growth, reproduction, movement, adaptation, and vertebrate vs. invertebrate characteristics. Studetns take home a coloring book to reinforce the differences between living and non-lving organisms. Environmental tie-ins include helping students understand that all things are connected so that neither ilving or non-living things can exist without each other.

IBPYP Standards

ALCOS Physical Science
(2)  Students Identify basic properties of objects.

ALCOS Life Science
(4)  Describe survival traits of living things, including color, shape, size, texture, and covering.

Patterns, Seasons, and Weather Using the live and display animals in the center and various living and non-living things in the habitat, students will identify and record patterns. Using the patterns, students will discover/identify their significance as they relate to weather, seasons, behavior and feeding strategies. Environmental tie-ins include making connections between the patterns and the subsequent large and small scale consequences.

Farm to Me The activities in this program help students understand that hamburgers don't just come from McDonald's. Using two tables with various props, including hamburger quarters forstudents to eat when they are finished, students identify and trace the components of a regular hamburger and the procedures required to produce the final product made on a family'sr backyard grill or purchased from a favorite fast food place. Environmental tie-ins include identifying the economics of production, use of renewable vs. non-renewable resources to produce the burgers, and ways to improve the process in a planet-friendly manner.

IBPYP Standards

ALCOS Physical Science
